in November, 2010, but his spirit lives on in the non-profit his
sister started in his memory. “My brother was a very social
person,” Ashley Swip said. “He was so friendly. He’s really

There has been a considerable amount of research done
regarding the wandering mind. Jonathan Schooler, Ph.D.,
a psychologist at the University of California at Santa Barbara,
had a group of undergraduate students read the opening
chapters of War and Peace on a computer monitor.
They were asked to tap a key each time they realized they
were not thinking about what they were reading. On average,
the students reported that their minds wandered almost six
times in a 45-minute session. [read more]

Sandy and I were joined in holy matrimony on a warm Sunday
evening in June, 1959, in St. Louis. The next morning we set
out on our honeymoon, driving west on old U.S. 66, later to be

What My Mom Means to Me

My mother is my best friend and a wonderful person. When
I was growing up, she raised my brother and me by herself.
We lived in Texas. My dad died when I was 5 years old, so
mom had a big job raising us and working to support us.
My grandmother helped out during our summer vacations
from school, but she lived here in Missouri, so it was mostly
mom who did everything. She did her best to make life fun
